California legislation The California Legislature passed several bills, including SB 1387, which would make California the first U.S. state to formally recognize Jewish identity as an ethnicity (in addition to a religion). Supporters say this will improve tracking of hate crimes, public-health data, and educational outcomes for Jewish Californians. Other measures address antisemitism, restrict false information in voter guides, and limit major public events on religious holidays. Governor Newsom has until September 30 to sign them.
